The Albanese government made these announcements over the last couple of days. The initiatives include:
Qld housing
A total of $101.8 million is being invested into “critical infrastructure,” such as roads, sewage, water, housing, and social housing, in a bid to create more than 4,800 homes across the state.
“Growing up in social housing, I know how important a roof over your head is. My government is committed to building Australia’s future, and that includes delivering our plan to build 1.2 million new homes over the next five years,” said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
“Today’s $101 million funding boost will deliver the enabling infrastructure needed to deliver an additional 4,800 across Queensland.”
Regional Qld
Regional Queensland is also seeing some attention with a $159 million in community infrastructure investment going towards 25 projects, including cultural and sporting hubs, town precincts, and parks.
“We’re making sure our regions remain great places to live, work and play by investing in critical community and economic infrastructure across regional and rural areas, in a fair and transparent way,” said Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King.
“I look forward to seeing the successful projects roll out across the nation, supporting employment, stimulating economies and strengthening communities.”
North Qld
Far North Queensland will receive a $50 million injection to boost housing and infrastructure. Meanwhile, $25 million is being allocated towards social housing supply in the region.
Senator for Queensland, Nita Green, said: “I am so proud to be part of a government that cares about and invests in the communities of Far North Queensland.
“The investment announced today shows that our government is listening to the needs of our region and is delivering them.”
The electorate of Kennedy is also seeing funding, with $50 million going toward housing and community infrastructure projects. Over $30 million has been allocated through the Housing Support Program package to boost social housing supply across the region.
Infrastructure includes community amenities such as roads, stormwater drainage, earthworks, and connection to utilities.
“These projects mean more houses for locals and better community facilities to bring them together. We want to see more social housing and more quality community led infrastructure where people need it most,” said Prime Minister Albanese.
Bruce Highway
Also included in the announcement was $7.2 billion in funding to fix the Bruce Highway, running between Brisbane and Cairns.
According to the government, the Bruce Highway has an average fatal and serious injury (FSI) crash rate three to five times higher than any major highway in NSW and Victoria.
This injection aims to make a safer way to travel for Queenslanders, said Treasurer Jim Chalmers: “We backed the Bruce with billions in the Budget and now we are investing billions more in the Highway that means so much to our regional and national economies.
“As a Queenslander I know how important the Bruce is to our state, from the south east corner to the tropical far north and everywhere in between. This is all about transporting people, goods and opportunities and linking and strengthening local communities and economies right around regional Queensland.
“As Treasurer and as a Queenslander I’m especially proud of the billions we’ve found to back the Bruce.”
